"Clothes are our canvas, words our brush and poetry our means of expression"
Kate and Grant meld words of poetry with clothing. The letters and words of poetry are cut from felt and applied by hand to vintage clothing. Together this creates a three dimensional work of art that makes the poetry and clothing come alive. The dresses give the poetry form, the poetry the clothes new meaning.
The poetry they choose is timeless - from Catullus through Lorca to Bukowski,. Their project is about the evocative power of words and clothes. Standing alone, the clothes and poems speak the language of memory. Each word and each piece of clothing had a significance before, but assembled in this way, the intent of each stitch and each new word is re-empowered and given new dramatic meaning. This is not just about the written word. It is about using words, it is about used words. Words that have been chosen, put together, loved and, like the old clothes, discarded and perhaps forgotten.
They re-invigorate both. |
